Welcome to the Printing Palace...

Here you'll find my sporadic (and sometimes nonsensical) musings about what we're up to here at TQE Headquarters, including special offers, competitions, new products, and up-to-the-minute info on which expensive piece of office equipment the kids have broken this time. (In the event of a lengthy silence on the blog front, you can safely assume they've set fire to my laptop, and resign yourself to the fact that you won't be receiving that splendid print anytime soon...)

Enjoy the madness, feel free to leave comments, share posts, or send cake.  We like cake.

I know what you're thinking... it's only January. And you're not wrong - but if you want to get Valentine's Day right this year, then you need to plan ahead. And when I say get it right, I mean make sure you've got a thoughtful, romantic, heartfelt gift tucked under your arm when the critical moment arrives.

One year, my husband bought me a window vac and a new bin for Valentine's Day. Don't get me wrong, we're a practical family and I really needed both of the aforementioned items (and they were good quality too - the Labrador still hasn't worked out how to gain access to the latest refuse receptacle, despite having defeated the previous three) but not for Valentine's Day. Valentine's Day is about saying 'I love you.' It's about saying 'I love you so much, I've really put some thought into how best to perfectly celebrate the epic love I have for you, in a grand way. It's also about not buying your wife a Valentine's Card which reads 'To My Darling Husband', which my husband also did another year. To be honest romance isn't his thing, which is why I'm here, writing this guide, in case there are any other hopeless husbands out there, who mean well, but just don't really know where to start.

At The Queen's English Prints, we take romance very seriously (well someone's got to) and if you'd like to pour your heart and soul into a truly bespoke gift that can be treasured for years to come, then we're here to help you do just that.

'Somebody Loves' Print

Our 'Somebody Loves' design is the perfect way to show someone how much they mean to you - simply fill this gorgeous heart with all their favourite things, places, quotes and memories... or fill it with everything you love about them! It shows you've put some thought into their gift - far more than a cheap box of chocolates and an entirely impersonal bottle of wine ever could.

'Couple' Print

Alternatively, if you have been blessed enough to have already shared many glorious years and memories with your other half, then create a print that celebrates your relationship! You could include the date of your wedding, the names of your children, the places you've holidayed... it's entirely up to you what you choose to create!

'So There's This Boy' Print

And don't forget about the little ones. They love you guys just as much as you love each other, so why not include them in Valentine's Day, by gifting a print that celebrates the magic they brought into your lives when they entered the world?

'Love is Blind - Optician's Sight Test' Print

We've such a diverse range of designs available, the world really is your oyster when it comes to investing in the perfect gift. And if you have an idea in mind but don't see it here, then get in touch; we're more than happy to work with you to produce a truly unique, one-of-a-kind printed creation.

Especially if it means no-one ends up receiving a vacuum cleaner for Valentine's Day.

Selling online can be vastly daunting for a newbie… after all, it’s a big, big marketplace for your tiny little product – where do you even start? If we take a nostalgic little detour back to the good old days (I'm referencing the period of mankind’s existence which, dare I say it, pre-dates the internet) setting up a pretty shop-front on a high street with heavy footfall was your prize turkey – and if the rent was cheap and the locals were rich, even better!

Fast-forward to today’s e-commerce marketplace, and there are millions of would-be shopkeepers sitting in their front rooms competing for a spot on a global high street that’s already noisy, manic and hideously over-crowded. If you don’t have your SEO down, it’s unlikely anyone will ever find their way to the front door of your lovely little virtual shop, let alone step inside and browse through the goods.

But what if there was something even the unlikeliest trader could do to increase their chances of success? What if, just off that crazy, filthy global high street there was a stylish bohemian avenue that only the loveliest of shopaholics liked to frequent? An alternative little suburb where cheap imports, mass produced nasties and poor quality knock-offs were simply banned from sale, and serious shoppers were attracted by the guarantee of beautiful handcrafted goods and top-notch customer service?

Hello Etsy.

If you have never ambled through Etsy before, you’ll be unfamiliar with its concept of guaranteeing only to stock products that are beautiful, unique and full of love. Full of love, because nothing on Etsy has been put together by a piece of machinery on a production line far, far away… rather Etsy is reserved purely for the sale of products which have been individually handcrafted by skilled artisans, who love what they do so much, that they want to let the world in on it.

It’s without the cheap-as-chips Hong Kong imports of eBay, neither does it play host to the big brands of Amazon, so you needn’t compete against anyone you simply don’t have the arsenal to deal with. Likewise, as a seller on Etsy, you can rest assured that all the soul you’ve poured into your wholly unique product range will be entirely appreciated by your customers… who only turned left onto this bohemian little avenue in the first place, because they’re looking for exactly what you’re offering. And they can smell good cake.

So on Etsy, your competition is manageable, your potential customers are already looking for you, and your landlord is a great guy who wants you to succeed! Etsy itself provides a range of tools, guides, communities and money-saving offers to help you hit the ground running, as well as a fantastic dashboard that allows you to keep track of your shop’s performance on a daily basis, and make the appropriate adjustments.

And speaking of money-saving offers, as Etsy insiders ourselves, we at The Queen’s English Prints can offer you a very special helping hand if you’re looking to join us on the avenue – open your Etsy shop using this link, and list your first 40 products for FREE! If you’re reading this article, chances are you’re probably the kind of heart-and-soul trader that would fit right in with a pretty little shopfront beside ours… and you’re more than welcome to move in!

And of course, it goes without saying that you’re more than welcome to stop by our Etsy Shop any time you like. We’re always inside, and we do love company. And cake. It wouldn’t hurt if you brought cake.

I know what you’re thinking... ‘The Queen’s English Prints’. It’s a bit long-winded... a bit of a mouthful... what’s it all about? What’s with all the crowns and the pearls? Well, it started as a mere nod to the beauty of the English language or, as it is otherwise known in more regal circles, ‘The Queen’s English’. (You see where we're going with this...)

Here at the printing palace we specialise in typographic prints after all – and what’s typography without language? Words are quite literally our bread and butter, so we thought it only appropriate that we name ourselves after the most sparkling words in the realm!

It’s also not a lie that we’re a big fan of jewels, tea parties and corgis, so it just all made masses of sense. Earl Grey anyone?

Ahh what happened?! We went to bed full of joy, good intentions, and Prosecco – and we woke up in… January. It’s pretty bleak over here on the other side of Christmas and New Year… but it doesn’t have to be! We’ve put together a few top tips to keep you smiling through one of the most monochrome times of the year, so boot up, buckle in and follow us… spring is on the horizon, and we know the way!

1. Don’t make vague NY resolutions, like ‘lose weight,’ ‘exercise more’ or ‘save money’. You’re more likely to ignore them, subsequently fail at them, and make yourself feel even glummer than you did before. Instead, focus on specific, achievable aims, like ‘Do 20 sit-ups every day before my shower.’ It’s small, easy enough to fit in, and kills both the ‘exercise more’ and (potentially) the ‘lose weight’ birds with one stone. Plus, it’s a great way to kick-start your day, and will have a positive effect on your mood and energy levels!

2. Indulge in a fantasy world… by which, we mean lose yourself in a good book! Sure, the weather’s grey, the nights are long, and you’re skint… but snuggling under a blanket with a mug of hot chocolate and a great read is practically free, and it’s a great form of escapism if you’re finding yourself stressed out by work, money, or the general day-to-day grind.

3. Meet up with people. Don’t get us wrong, technology is a wonderful thing, but social networks aren’t nearly as social as you think they are. When you interact with people face to face, it triggers certain physiological responses in the brain that benefit your mental health in ways that communicating via text or online just can’t!

4. Don’t overthink it. Ok, we know we’ve egged you on a bit, but really January is just another month. And a month by any other name, would smell as… well, you get the drift. Just like every other month, January still features all your favourites, including Friday nights, weekends, payday, and the rest. And hey, before you know it, it’ll be February!

5. We’ve definitely saved the best til last! If you’ve read through all of the above and you’re still upset at the thought of January 2016’s Great Prosecco Drought, then cheer yourself with this – if you pop back to the homepage of this beautiful website, and fill in the newsletter sign-up form at the bottom, then we will send you a very pretty little email entitling you to 20% off EVERYTHING at The Queen’s English Prints! With free postage on top of that, you can invest in a lovely little pick-me-up for yourself or, if you’re feeling super-ahead-of-the-game, why not tick off Valentine’s Day without breaking the bank?

It’s finally arrived – the last day of school before the Christmas holidays are officially in full swing, and we’re all sentenced to an intense week of scraping our children off the ceiling at least three times a day, in anticipation of a very important visit from the big guy in red.

At The Queen’s English Prints, we’ve been so busy getting everyone’s orders out and into the hands of Royal Mail’s finest red-suited deliverers in time for December 25th, that the whole festive build-up has whizzed by in somewhat of a blur.

But now that the last Christmas order is complete and the rush is over, it’s time to sit back and smell the Baileys. There’s still a whole week left to dive headfirst into all the mince-pie-based madness, and truly embrace what is supposed to be the most magical time of year!

So if you too are ready to get stuck into Christmas, then here’s a few tips on how to reignite the magic, and truly do December justice, before January rears its ugly head…

1. The Letter...

If your little ones haven’t yet penned their wish lists, then now’s the time to sit them down with a hot chocolate, a gingerbread man, and a good old-fashioned Argos catalogue! A word of warning here – I recommend you attempt a spot of incredibly subtle mind control to ensure they remember to request all those must-haves they mentioned (and you ordered) three weeks ago. I whole-heartedly endorse using The Force, if it is strong in your family, or alternatively a good old-fashion verbal cue should suffice: “Do you need any help spelling ‘Skylanders', darling, or are you alright?” You can then hang them on the tree or place them in the fireplace for the elves to collect overnight, or get down with your standard self and just put them in the post box! You could even write a letter of reply and leave it for the kids to find at the end of their bed or on the doormat outside, the next morning... or place it with their presents on the big day itself.

2. Put Together a Christmas Eve Box...

These are becoming more and more popular, and let’s face it – Christmas Eve is, in a lot of ways, more magical than Christmas Day anyway! It’s filled with all the excitement and anticipation of the big jolly elf’s visit, and in my experience, the children literally do not know what to do with themselves – enter the Christmas Eve box. You could put new pyjamas, a Christmas DVD and a bag of marshmallows inside, ready for a snuggled up Christmas Eve evening, or you could include an activity book, a jigsaw, and even a treasure map (why not hide some chocolate coins around your home for them to find and feast on?) if you want to keep them occupied for longer.

3. PROVE Santa's Real...

So whilst researching this post we stumbled upon this amazing website, which will produce a photo of Santa IN THE ACT! All you have to do is provide them with a photo of your living room (or wherever Santa will be making his deliveries) and they’ll place Santa in situ, getting on with what Santa does best! Show it to your kids on Christmas morning as a still shot from your in-home CCTV ("Oh you didn’t know we have invisible in-home CCTV, sweetheart? Well we do! Remember that, next time you promise me that you DIDN'T hit your brother over the head with my Yankee candle, ok?")

4. Track Santa...

In the age of tablets and smartphones, everyone’s tracking Santa these days, so don’t miss out on a piece of this completely free action. There are a number of websites that will enable you to track his journey on Christmas Eve, - Norad is a great one - as well as this one, that’ll keep you up-to-date on how the reindeer are doing too! And don’t forget about the International Space Station - if the skies are clear on Christmas Eve, you should be able to spot it from the UK, rising in the west, passing low in the sky and setting in the south east at around 5:20pm… right about the time Santa's sleigh may or may not be hitting the area, if you catch my drift!

5. ‘The Night Before Christmas’...

Smartphones and tracking apps aside, let’s get old-school for a second. When I was little I had a copy of this book, and every Christmas Eve - without fail - someone would read it to me. It was the only day of the year the book ever saw the light of day, but I can still remember how ridiculously magical it felt listening to that story, and imagining the Santa so beautifully described within it. If you don’t have a copy of this book in your house – now is the time to invest… go on, GO!

6. Just Enjoy It!

Tiny people are only tiny for such a short time, and if you can soak up even 50% of their excitement at Christmas, you’ll have an absolutely magical holiday. Oh and don’t forget the Baileys... if all else fails, it works like a beautiful little glass of Christmas catalyst… trust me!

Merry Christmas from us all at The Queen’s English Prints!
